Word Rampage

Word Rampage Rules

Detailed rules and gameplay guidance for Word Rampage.

1. Objective

Word Rampage is a word hunt for 2-4 players on a shared 4x4 grid. Everyone searches at the same time, so there are no turns to wait for. Find words and earn the highest total score before the shared timer runs out.

2. Finding words

Drag from one letter to a touching letter, then release to submit your word. You can move horizontally, vertically or diagonally, and change direction along the way. A word must use at least two letters and can use up to all 16 tiles. You cannot visit the same tile twice within one word, but you can use those tiles again in a different word. Found words, their finders and their points are visible to players and watchers as they happen.

3. Accepted spellings

Words must appear in the dictionary selected in the table settings. Accepted spellings can be British English, American English, or both. The British + American option accepts a word if it appears in either list. A word that is not in the selected dictionary scores no points.

4. Letter values

The small number on each tile is its letter value. A, E, I, O, U, L, N, S, T and R are worth 1 point; D and G are worth 2; B, C, M and P are worth 3; F, H, V, W and Y are worth 4; K is worth 5; J and X are worth 8; Q and Z are worth 10. Add the values of all letters used to get the word score before bonuses. For example, CAT scores 5 points: C is worth 3, A is worth 1 and T is worth 1.

5. Bonus tiles

Each board has three letter-bonus tiles and one word-bonus tile, all in different positions. Letter bonuses have an 80% chance of being 2L and a 20% chance of being 3L. The word bonus has a 90% chance of being 2W and a 10% chance of being 3W. A blue 2L doubles that letter’s value; a purple 3L triples it. An orange 2W doubles the completed word; a pink 3W triples it. Apply letter bonuses first, add all letter points, then apply the word bonus. For example, CAT normally scores 5 points. With C on 3L it scores 11 points; if the path also includes 3W, it scores 33. Multiple letter bonuses each apply to their own letter. Bonus tiles stay available for other words throughout the round.

6. Invalid and repeated words

Each word can score only once per round across all players. If players find the same word, the first valid submission received earns the points. A different route through the grid does not make the same word available again. After you release a word, the word display above the grid shows the result: green letters and a points total mean it was accepted and scored; red letters with a shake mean the word or path was invalid; amber letters with a shake mean someone has already found that word, including words you found yourself. Rejected words earn no points and do not deduct from your total. Keep searching for a different word.

7. Timer and results

Everyone uses the same countdown. When time runs out, submissions stop and the player with the highest total score wins. Players with equal scores share that placing; equal highest scores produce a draw. On the game-over screen, click or tap a player’s score to see their words, the points for each word and any 2L, 3L, 2W or 3W bonuses used. Close the breakdown to return to the results, where you can choose to play again or leave.
